Farm Experiences

Our Farm Experiences program provides visitors with an opportunity to experience and learn about all the goings-on at Ironwood Organics throughout the seasons. As a diverse, certified organic farm, the health of our soils, hedgerows, woodland areas and wetland are an integral part of growing healthy and nutritious crops. We believe that the greater the biodiversity (including birds, mammals, insects and microscopic organisms), the more resilient and stable our farm environment is. A healthy ecosystem results in healthy food - simple. We are excited to welcome visitors to the farm and feel compelled to share all that we have learned over the years in our efforts to provide habitat for the many creatures that call our land home.

Each Farm Experience will start with a walk & talk tour of the farm and a discussion about organic farming and agroecology, biodiversity, ecological resilience, sustainability, permaculture, climate change, bio-security, food sovereignty and seed laws, soil biota, and pollinators. These themes guide and govern much of what we do. We work within a complex web of interrelated life that most of us don't give much thought to. There won't be a test, but we hope to encourage folks to glance up from their dinner plates and think about where their food comes from and how it is produced.

Along the walk, we'll see fields of grain (wheat, barley, rye, and oats), potatoes and beans; diverse forest ecosystems; a hops yard; vegetable production; pastured chickens, quail and pigs; and hedgerows bustling with life. Depending on the time of year and time of day, we can also expect to see or hear Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks, a resident Red-tailed Hawk, American Bitterns, Monarch butterflies, bats, fireflies, and a diversity of other wildlife including many endangered species.

Our target traveler is someone who is eager to become healthy, curious to see where their food comes from; senses there are cracks in the food system; and yearns to get out into a vibrant outdoors.
